The Group now comprises Booker Wholesale, Makro, Booker Direct, Classic Drinks, Ritter Courivaud, Chef Direct, Premier, Family Shopper, Budgens, Londis and Booker India. Together we are privileged to serve 1.3 million customers.
The Company is the UK's largest cash and carry operator, offering branded and private-label goods which are sold to over 503,000 customers including independent convenience stores, grocers, leisure outlets, pubs and restaurants. The Group currently lists circa 18,000 product lines, comprising an extensive range of branded and own label grocery, fresh and frozen food, beers, wines, spirits, tobacco and non-food items. In the year ended 25 March 2016, sales totalling £3.17 billion were collected by the customer from the group’s branches and sales totalling £1.8 billion were delivered to the Company’s customer premises.
The Company currently trades from 200 Business Centres in the UK. The average size of these branches is approximately 47,000 sq ft, although the Group has four branches over 100,000 sq ft and 12 branches under 20,000 sq ft. Our business centres now have a lighter, brighter environment and an improved choice, price and service.
Makro operates 30 stores across the UK, one of the stores being in Belfast. Makro currently operates a primarily cash-and carry wholesale business. Makro offers a broad range of non-food items, such as stationery and office equipment, furniture and furnishings, catering and cleaning equipment, clothing and general maintenance products.
Booker Direct/Ritter-Courivaud/Classic Drinks/Chef Direct
Booker Direct has great customers including the prison service in England and Wales, Marks & Spencer and most of the cinema chains in the UK. In 2010 we acquired Classic Drinks, an on-trade wholesaler supplying pubs and licensed customers mainly in the North West. We are in the process of rolling this expertise out on a national basis.
In 2010 we also acquired Ritter-Courivaud, a leading speciality food supplier to restaurants. Through combining the logistics expertise we have in Booker Direct, with the catering knowledge from Ritter-Courivaud and the Groups’ buying scale, we launched Chef Direct in 2012. Chef Direct is based in Didcot and has won some important clients such as Aramark.
In the last year the Group delivered £1.8bn of product to retailers and caterers in the UK. Through using some of the space in the Makro business centres we will be able to increase our delivered business.
Premier is the UK’s number one symbol group with over 3,200 stores nationwide. The group is committed to delivering more profits for retailers and a better shopping experience for consumers. Premier has delivered double digit growth for twelve consecutive years.
Premier continues to advertise on TV. Premier is advertised every day which will be seen over 100 million times. The TV advert features Premier’s famous Mega Deal promotions along with retailers to emphasise the local aspect of Premier Store. As well as this, retailers also benefit from a full promotional programme covering all categories of fresh, frozen, grocery and impulse to ensure great value for shoppers to drive footfall into stores. This market leading promotional package, along with own-label and price-mark-packs, really drives the value message to help Premier retailers grow their business.
Family Shopper is a new discount format for independent retailers that brings together the strength of symbol retailing with the great value available in the discount channel. It has been specifically developed to help independent retailers capture the growing sales and profits from the discount sector.
The discount format provides retailers with everything that shoppers would expect from a convenience store including chilled, alcohol, grocery and tobacco along with services such as Lotto and Paypoint. This is then combined with the best of the discounters, covering a wide range of £1 non-food items such as stationery, kitchen utensils, plus a broad seasonal offer and large frozen section. Providing comprehensive disciplines, all Family Shopper stores offer a simplified range that removes duplication. Also merchandising in full trays makes the format easy to operate while minimising back stock and easing cash flow.
Londis is one of the UK’s leading symbol convenience store brands with 1,500 members across the UK. Londis works in partnership with its independent retailers to provide local communities with all they need in convenience shopping, close to home. As well as the strength of a nationally recognised brand, Londis supports retailers with marketing, purchasing, store development, IT and supply chain services to help them compete and succeed in today’s rapidly expanding convenience market.
Budgens is an independent retail brand and is part of Booker Group. There are more than 120 Budgens stores across the UK ranging from petrol forecourts to neighbourhood supermarkets, independently owned by Budgens retailers. Budgens retailers care about the quality, provenance and value of their food and their communities’ needs. Budgens was named the ‘best top-up shop’ at the CTP Awards 2015, voted for by 20,000 UK shoppers.
